Real-Time Analysis of Sensory Dissonance

چکیده
We describe a tool for real-time musical analysis based on a measure of roughness, the principal element of sensory dissonance. While most historical musical analysis is based on the notated score, our tool permits analysis of a recorded or live audio signal in its full complexity. We proceed from the work of Richard Parncutt and Ernst Terhardt, extending their algorithms for the psychoacoustic analysis of harmony to be used for the live analysis of spectral data. This allows for the study of a wider variety of timbrally-rich acoustic or electronic sounds which was not possible with previous algorithms. Further, the direct treatment of audio signal facilitates a wide range of analytical applications, from the comparison of multiple recordings of the same musical work to the real-time analysis of a live performance. Our algorithm is programmed in C as an external object for the program Max/MSP. Taking musical examples by Arnold Schoenberg, Gérard Grisey and Iannis Xenakis, our algorithm yields varying roughness estimates depending on instrumental orchestration or electronic texture, confirming our intuitive understanding that timbre affects sensory dissonance. This is one of the many possibilities this tool presents for analysis and composition of music that is timbrally-dynamic and microtonally-complex.

Explaining the Railsback stretch in terms of the inharmonicity of piano tones and sensory dissonance.
The perceptual results of Plomp and Levelt [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 38, 548-560 (1965)] for the sensory dissonance of a pair of pure tones are used to estimate the dissonance of pairs of piano tones. By using the spectra of tones measured for a real piano, the effect of the inharmonicity of the tones is included. This leads to a prediction for how the tuning of this piano should deviate from an ide...
متن کاملSpatial Utilization of Sensory Dissonance and the Creation of Sonic Sculpture
Issues of musically consonant and dissonant sonorities have defined compositional practices for centuries. Contributing to our understanding of consonant and dissonant sonorities is the quantification of sensory dissonance. There has been much research done in developing a method to quantify the sensory dissonance between two tones. All methods consider the physical and psychoacoustical aspects...
متن کاملReal-time Dissonancizers: Two Dissonance-augmenting Audio Effects
We present two simple perceptually motivated audio effects designed to increase the perceived sensory dissonance/roughness (a process we call “dissonancization”) of audio input. The first involves heterodyning multiple bands of the audio signal at different frequencies to break each sinusoid in each band into two sinusoids separated in frequency by the amount that Kameoka and Kuriyagawa [1] pre...
متن کاملCharacterizing Musical Signals with Wigner-Ville Interferences
This paper presents a new characterization of musical signals which may lead to better understanding about how such signals are perceived. We first consider some signal analysis methods which facilitate measures of perceived qualities of music. More precisely, we consider a particular representation of signal energy on which to base a quantitative measure of sensory dissonance. After defining s...
متن کاملVisualization and Calculation of the Roughness of Acoustical Musical Signals Using the Synchronization Index Model (sim)
The synchronization index model of sensory dissonance and roughness accounts for the degree of phase-locking to a particular frequency that is present in the neural patterns. Sensory dissonance (roughness) is defined as the energy of the relevant beating frequencies in the auditory channels with respect to the total energy. The model takes rate-code patterns at the level of the auditory nerve a...
